Situation

We want to make it very easy for people to power manage their devices & do pxe boot.

todo

  • find right zigbee adaptor e.g. link
  • find right boot device (great candidates):
    • glnet, there is version 3 coming, runs openwrt so all flexibility, only 2 x 2.5 gbit/sec port
    • routeros based ones, have great HW and ca natively do 2.5 gbit/sec on multiple ports
  • find right zigbee usb stick which works on routeros/openwrt (lets try both)
  • do the research to make some scripts e.g. bash, vsh ... to see how to controll/install the required
  • make vlang crystal lib script to configure the router, to trigger a power cycle, to change pxe boot (kristof can help)
  • configure tftp/pxe boot so we can define in which mode a computer boots
  • make a recovery pxe image, inspiration see hetzner, make sure we can install stuff on it, use a big ramdisk e.g. compile v, hero, easy for development purposes (works in hetzner), need to boot this over pxe
  • see if we can run hero directly on the gl-inet
  • see how to combine the gl-inet with routeros, this might be best approach, use gl-inet to do the tftboot, management of the routeros, ...
  • also check smalles gl-inet where it sill works

Requirements

  • super easy to get started (we install with a hero cmdline, once we have ethernet access to it)
  • cost effective < 60 USD per computer (all components if e.g. 4)
  • let it run on some nodes in ghent as well as in lab weynand (the fast computers)
